The inspiration behind MilkUp is deeply rooted in the desire to bring the authentic Italian cappuccino experience to homes worldwide. The design is a blend of bold, colourful, and simple elements, with high-quality surfacing and materials. The external shell features a prominent colour split that lowers the perceived height of the product, while the rear ventilation slots integrate a horizontal theme found in many Lavazza products. This modern look adds a special touch to any kitchen.
MilkUp's unique properties lie in its ability to quietly and efficiently prepare different coffee recipes using magnetic induction. The backlit stop&go button is visually emphasized by a coloured ring. The jug, made from brushed INOX, has no internal moving parts, making it easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. It features clear marks for minimum and maximum levels on the inside and an ergonomic handle. The whisk has a dedicated storage area on top of the lid.
The design realization technology involves a main shell made of plastic (ABS) with textured and glossy finishing. The logo is pad printed, and the jug is made from brushed stainless steel. The product also features silicone rubber feet. The dimensions of the product are 205mm / 130mm / 230mm, and it weighs 0.9kg. The minimum milk capacity is 60 ml, with a maximum capacity for milk frothing at 120 ml and for milk heating at 180 ml. The removable parts are dishwasher safe.
MilkUp is designed for simple and intuitive user interaction. To use the frother, simply insert the whisk in the center of the jug, add the milk so that it at least covers the minimum mark, place the jug in the base unit, and close the lid to avoid any splashes. Press the button on the front of the base to start frothing. If you want to froth milk without heating it, press and hold the button for three seconds. The frothing cycle takes about a minute and a half, after which it will stop automatically and sound two beeps. After that, simply pour the frothed milk for a truly delicious cappuccino or latte.
The project was designed in Turin, Italy, and the complete product development process took about 10 months. The development process involved conceptual and formal research, 3D modelling, physical mock-ups, and prototyping. Despite the extremely short development time, the result is a product that lets you enjoy authentic Italian cappuccino at home, quietly and efficiently preparing different recipes using magnetic induction.
